Question 1

How much does a wedding DJ cost in Alabama?

Accepted Answer

Wedding DJ prices in Alabama typically range from $800 to $3,500, with the average falling between $1,200 and $2,000. Factors affecting price include the DJ's experience, event duration, equipment needed, and additional services like lighting or MC duties. At Feel The Beat, our wedding packages start at $1,500 and include professional sound systems, wireless microphones, and a pre-wedding consultation.

Question 2

What is included in a typical DJ package?

Accepted Answer

A standard wedding DJ package typically includes: professional sound system and speakers, wireless microphone for toasts and announcements, music mixing and playlist coordination, MC/emcee services, pre-event consultation, setup and breakdown, and 4-6 hours of performance time. Premium packages may add uplighting, dance floor lighting, fog machines, photo booth services, and extended hours.

Question 3

Do DJs charge extra for travel?

Accepted Answer

Most DJs include travel within a certain radius (typically 25-50 miles) in their base price. For events beyond that distance, you can expect a travel fee of $0.50-$1.00 per mile or a flat fee. At Feel The Beat, we serve all of Central Alabama including Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and Huntsville with competitive travel rates.

Question 4

Is a deposit required to book a DJ?

Accepted Answer

Yes, most professional DJs require a deposit to secure your date—typically 25-50% of the total package price. This non-refundable retainer guarantees your DJ won't book another event for your date. The remaining balance is usually due 2-4 weeks before your event.

Question 5

Are tips expected for wedding DJs?

Accepted Answer

Tipping is appreciated but not required. If your DJ exceeds expectations, a tip of 10-20% of the service cost or $50-$200 is customary. Many couples also provide a vendor meal as a gesture of appreciation for DJs working long events.

Question 6

What payment methods do DJs accept?

Accepted Answer

Most professional DJ companies accept multiple payment methods including credit cards, debit cards, checks, cash, and digital payments like Venmo or PayPal. We recommend confirming accepted payment methods and getting a written contract before booking.

Question 7

How far in advance should I book a wedding DJ?

Accepted Answer

We recommend booking your wedding DJ 9-12 months in advance, especially for peak wedding season (April-October) and popular dates (Saturdays). The best DJs often book up a year or more ahead. If you're planning a wedding within 6 months, contact DJs immediately as availability becomes very limited.

Question 8

When is the best time to book a DJ?

Accepted Answer

The ideal time to book is right after securing your venue and date. This ensures you get your preferred DJ before their calendar fills up. Weekday weddings and off-season dates (November-March) typically have more availability and may offer discounts.

Question 9

What happens if my DJ cancels or gets sick?

Accepted Answer

Reputable DJ companies have backup plans in place. Professional companies maintain a roster of qualified DJs who can step in if needed. Before booking, ask about their emergency backup policy—it should be detailed in your contract. At Feel The Beat, we have 8 experienced DJs and always ensure a qualified replacement if the unexpected occurs.

Question 10

Can I book the same DJ for my ceremony and reception?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely! Many couples prefer having the same DJ handle both the ceremony music and reception entertainment. This ensures seamless transitions and consistent quality. Ceremony coverage is often available as an add-on service, typically adding $200-$500 to your package.

Question 11

How many hours should I book my DJ for?

Accepted Answer

Most wedding receptions run 4-5 hours. We recommend booking your DJ for at least 30 minutes before guests arrive for sound checks and setup, through the last dance. A typical timeline: cocktail hour (1 hour), dinner (1.5 hours), dancing (2-3 hours). Extended hours can be added for after-parties.

Question 12

Can I create my own playlist or request specific songs?

Accepted Answer

Yes! A great DJ will encourage you to share must-play songs, first dance selections, and important family dedications. Most DJs provide planning tools or forms to collect your preferences. You can also create a 'do not play' list for songs you want avoided.

Question 13

Will the DJ take requests from guests?

Accepted Answer

This is completely up to you. During your consultation, you'll decide if you want open requests, requests from an approved list only, or no guest requests at all. Many couples choose a balanced approach—allowing requests that fit the vibe while keeping control of the overall playlist.

Question 14

What music genres can wedding DJs play?

Accepted Answer

Professional DJs have extensive music libraries spanning all genres: Top 40, classic rock, R&B, country, hip-hop, electronic/EDM, jazz, oldies, Latin, Motown, indie, and more. A skilled DJ seamlessly blends genres to keep all generations happy and the dance floor packed.

Question 15

Can the DJ play clean versions of songs?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Professional wedding DJs carry clean/radio edit versions of popular songs. If family-friendly entertainment is important to you, discuss this during your consultation. Your DJ can also skillfully mix out inappropriate lyrics in real-time.

Question 16

What if I want live music for the ceremony but a DJ for the reception?

Accepted Answer

This is a popular choice! Many couples hire a string quartet, acoustic guitarist, or pianist for the ceremony, then have a DJ take over for cocktail hour and reception. Just ensure the timing and space accommodates both, and inform each vendor about the transition.

Question 17

What should I look for when hiring a wedding DJ?

Accepted Answer

Key factors include: experience with weddings specifically (not just clubs), professional equipment and backup gear, positive reviews and references, liability insurance, a personality that matches your vibe, willingness to meet before booking, clear contracts, and good communication. Ask to see videos of them performing at actual weddings.

Question 18

What's the difference between a club DJ and a wedding DJ?

Accepted Answer

Wedding DJs specialize in reading diverse crowds (ages 8-80), managing event flow and timelines, making announcements, coordinating with vendors, and creating romantic moments alongside party vibes. Club DJs focus on continuous mixing for a single demographic. Wedding experience is crucial—it's a completely different skill set.

Question 19

Will the DJ act as MC/emcee?

Accepted Answer

Most wedding DJs include MC services—introducing the wedding party, announcing first dances, cake cutting, bouquet toss, and other key moments. Discuss your preferred level of DJ interaction: some couples want an energetic host while others prefer minimal announcements with more focus on music.

Question 20

How does the DJ coordinate with other vendors?

Accepted Answer

Experienced wedding DJs work closely with photographers, videographers, wedding coordinators, and venue staff. They'll follow your timeline, cue vendors for key moments, and adjust as needed. We recommend providing your DJ with a vendor contact list and timeline in advance.

Question 21

What equipment does a professional DJ bring?

Accepted Answer

Professional DJs bring high-quality speakers appropriate for your venue size, subwoofers for dance music, mixers and controllers, laptops with extensive music libraries, wireless microphones (usually 2-4), cables and stands. Many also offer lighting packages including uplights, dance floor lighting, and intelligent moving head lights.

Question 22

What time does the DJ arrive to set up?

Accepted Answer

Professional DJs typically arrive 1-2 hours before the event start time to set up equipment, test sound levels, and coordinate with the venue. For weddings, arriving during cocktail hour setup is common so everything is ready when guests move to the reception space.

Question 23

Does the DJ need a meal?

Accepted Answer

While not required, providing a vendor meal is customary and appreciated, especially for events lasting 6+ hours. A fed DJ performs better! Most venues offer discounted vendor meals. Ensure your DJ has a break scheduled to eat—usually during dinner service.

Question 24

What does the DJ wear?

Accepted Answer

Professional DJs typically dress in business casual to formal attire matching your event's dress code. Discuss expectations during your consultation—most DJs can accommodate requests from suits and ties to more casual smart attire. Our DJs always dress professionally and can match your wedding's formality level.

Question 25

How much space does a DJ setup require?

Accepted Answer

A standard DJ setup requires approximately 8-10 feet of table space and access to power outlets. If adding lighting, uplights, or photo booth services, additional space is needed. Your DJ will coordinate with your venue to find the optimal setup location for sound coverage.

Question 26

Can the DJ play during outdoor ceremonies?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Many DJs offer portable sound systems for outdoor ceremonies. Key considerations include power access (or generator needs), weather backup plans, and local noise ordinances. Discuss outdoor setups during your consultation so your DJ can prepare appropriate equipment.

Question 27

Can you DJ events other than weddings?

Question 30

Can you help plan the reception timeline?
